Helping everyone make the most of the internet

Work Experience Placements

Village Web Company CIC offers work experience placements to local schools and colleges. These placements form part of our commitment to help increase diversity in the UK tech industry. The placements are designed to give students hands on experience of working within a small business and delivering projects for small businesses and social enterprises. There are no specific entry requirements, as placement content can be tailored to accommodate individual students, but they would be unsuitable for those with no experience of using digital devices.

Placement Types

We currently offer two placements, one which focuses on web development and the other that is focused on digital marketing.

If you are a school, college or training provider that would like to discuss placements for your students please contact Claire to discuss your requirements.

Assistant Web Developer

This would be an ideal placement for somebody that would like to learn how to build websites. Prior experience of web development is not necessary, as full training will be given, but this role is unlikely to be suitable for somebody that is not comfortable using a computer.

This placement is primarily designed to gain experience of a front-end web development role and will help students develop the skills needed to build websites using HTML and CSS, the two languages used for all websites. They will also be shown how to create, customise and maintain websites using WordPress and other online platforms.

Digital Marketing Assistant

This would be an ideal placement for somebody with an interest in social media and content creation. Prior experience of digital marketing is not necessary, as full training will be given, but this role is unlikely to be suitable for somebody that is not comfortable using a computer and smart phone.

This placement will show students how to use social media platforms on behalf of a small business, including how to monitor the performance of websites and online accounts. They will be shown how social media activity fits into a wider marketing plan and how to use a Content Calendar to help schedule online content. This placement also includes helping to maintain our online gift shop. As part of the placement, students will be shown how to create content for use on websites, blogs and social media and learn about the importance of accessibility when posting online.

Additional Info

As Village Web Company is a small social enterprise, students must be willing to work flexibly and they will be expected to do work which is not directly connected to web development or digital marketing, such as general admin tasks, dealing with customers and reception duties. All students will be provided with full training for any task they are asked to do.

During their placements students will be expected to document their learning journey, by contributing blog posts about their experiences throughout the placement.

Accessibility

Village Web Company is wheelchair accessible and features no stairs or stepped level changes, but does not currently have accessible toilet facilities.

Local Facilities

Romiley has a number of local cafes and sandwich shops where students can buy lunch to eat in or take away. There are also other shops where they can buy drinks or snacks including a Sainsburys Local, which offers meal deals.
