Hi, my name is Heather, I’ve been working at the Village Web Company CIC for 4 days as a Digital Marketing Assistant. During my work experience, I assisted in creating and scheduling social media posts for the company’s various platforms using Canva and Buffer. I also took an active role in generating new ideas and concepts for content that would drive engagement and promote brand awareness. Through this experience, I gained valuable insights into social media strategy, including the importance of consistency and engaging with the target audience. This opportunity provided me with practical skills that will benefit me in the future of social media and marketing positions. Overall, I have really enjoyed the experience, the given tasks have boosted my confidence in my abilities. I hope to undertake similar roles in the future.
This is currently my second week of my placement at The Village Web Company. During this week, I have been working on a few different projects which I have quite enjoyed doing.
This weeks projects
During this week I had a few main projects that I had the opportunity to work on a few projects.
Help Desk Prototype
Village Web Company CRM Prototype System
Client Website
Client Website
During this project I was able to assist with making alterations to a client’s website this allowed me to have the ability to see how a project would work when a client asks for some modifications to an already built website.
Additionally during this project I was able to fix a few bugs which was affecting the website at the time. I did this by remaking an aspect of the website.
CRM Prototype
Within the office, we had a discussion about potentially turning some internal documents about clients to a digital version that would allow easier access to information for staff. After discussing this, we had a chat about potentially creating a solution that could help provide this for the company.
Currently I am working on a prototype which should be used to test if this is a feasible project and something that could benefit the company in the long term.
Additionally within the creation of this project, I have use the company branding to try and create a site that will match with the companies brand even though this would be an internal site that cannot be accessed by outside users.
In the next week, I am hoping to have some of the core functionality working as intended. After that I’m hoping that I will be able to make the website look better.
Help Desk Prototype
Since last week, I have created a few design documents and had a few discussions on the best ways we could develop this solution in a way that would provide the most value to the company.
I’m currently on my first week at the Village Web Company, during this week we have explored ways that we can help the company using our current knowledge whilst learning new skills and tools such as WordPress.
This weeks projects
Currently we have had the opportunity to work on a few projects since we are settling into the company for our first week.
Village Blog Post
Programming Free Web Challenge
Learn more about WordPress
During this, I decided to try and make a few additional things to see if I could make a few tools that could be useful for the company.
Bulk Image Optimizer
During a conversation within the office we discussed images in regard to how clients would provide images for websites, this lead the conversation down the path of how large images on the web can slow down a websites performance.
I decided I could make a bulk image optimizer which would allow you to optimize a large amounts of images at once using the command line.
Bootstrap Column System Recreation
During the first week of the placement, we discussed tools and frameworks that can be used within the front-end of a website to assist a developer with creating a website that looks professional.
After a while we was talking about recreating the column system which is used to space content out on a website, currently I’m working on making this.
Help Desk Prototype
During our first week we discussed about creating a help desk prototype which would be used to help organise support tickets, currently this would just be a prototype to see if this idea would be useful for the company.
I have had the pleasure of doing my work experience at Village Web Company for 4 days from the 18th of July to the 21st of July working as a Digital Marketing Assistant. On the first day, I was introduced to the general gist of what Village Web Company did as a business, which is web design services and training courses. I was taught the different software’s that were used at the business and the ways that they built the websites. I was also shown the business’ Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts.
The next day, I was handed over the accounts, and shown two websites that I could use to create digital marketing materials. One website was Canva, which is a simple to use designing website which I could use for free to create designs to be put on social media. I was also shown a site called Hootsuite which allows you to attach social media accounts and schedule posts for later times.
Originally, I began going through all the different sites that Village Web Company had built in the past and getting examples of the different skills that you can purchase off the company, but I changed to doing something else when I was handed the social media accounts.
I took a picture of the front of the shop and began using it to make a design that would advertise to the socials exactly what the business did and what you could purchase from them, and a link to the website so that they could find out more. I then created more posts that could be scheduled for later such as ones that individually advertised the websites, the training courses and how to contact the company. I also created posts that included quotes about tech from famous people in technology, and random fun tech facts, in the hopes that these posts would gain traction on the socials and gain more likes and follows so that the advertisements would get more people seeing them. I then used Hootsuite to schedule these posts on the different socials. I was also taught about hashtags and how to use them correctly to keep track of what had been posted and get more people seeing it using the appropriate and relevant hashtags.
The next day, I was shown how to use contrast checkers and alternate text to allow more accessibility onto the posts, for example those who had a lack of sight. I then created some more designs using Canva and scheduled some more posts throughout the day that advertised the business. Later in the day, an older woman with a lack of sight called Shirley came in with a Huawei tablet that wasn’t working very well, and I got to see how Claire would help people with their technology for free and teach them everything they need to know in the event of this happening again. I then created some questions that I could use to interview the team at Village Web Company.
Then, on my last day, I began by scheduling some more posts that I had created the previous day. I then did a photoshoot with a member of the team called Declan to take pictures of the shop to create an advertisement for the website and socials about being able to rent the shop to use for meetings. I turned these pictures into advertisements and scheduled them to go out later on the socials. I then received Declan and Claire’s answers to my Meet the Team questions and made them into a PDF on Canva for Claire to use as an advertisement in the future, or to display on the Village Web Company website.
That concludes my work experience at Village Web Company, I had fun and learned a lot about the world of work.
